Fundación Rara Avis, in collaboration with local organization Patrimonio Vivo Costa, is leading a conservation project at the mouth of the Aconcagua River in Concón, Chile. The project aims to protect the nesting area of American Oystercatcher (Haematopus palliatus), a coastal bird species categorized as “Near Threatened” in Chile. The local population of this species is in risk, with low reproductive success rates (between 0% and 13%), primarily due to human-related threats such as stray dogs, tourist horseback riding, beach parties, and insufficient signage.

The project proposes to fully enclose the nesting area—approximately 450 m², dominated by the native plant Ambrosia chamissonis, preferred by the species for nesting—using a durable and well-marked perimeter fence. This action seeks to reduce disturbances during the breeding season and support population recovery by increasing reproductive success.

In addition to fence installation, project activities include mapping and zoning nesting area, technical fence design, hiring suppliers, population monitoring, and hosting an opening ceremony with participation from local stakeholders, municipal authorities and diplomatic representatives. The initiative also aims to raise community awareness about importance of protecting coastal biodiversity.

The project will run for approximately six months, from June to November 2025, and has a total estimated budget of US$6,983. Of this amount, €5.000 will be apported by Dierenpark Amersfoort Wildlife Fund
